my questions about the Elliot article

Honestly the Elliot article has been bothering me. I agree that people own their own bodies but when do we draw the line of what is ownership and what is mutilation and dangerous to ones health? I just wonder if this could go under the ctegory of self-mutilation or an extreme way of cutting. Depression manifests itself in many ways including self mutilation. Could this be an extreme case of depression? or even a desperate cry for attention? Some people are also cutters for the attention they receive. Could this be a way of crying out for attention? We all know that amputees whether its right or not are looked at differently than those who have all four limbs. It just keeps me wondering what is really going through the minds of the amputees.
