Alcoholism and Aptemnophilia

I know we have been talking about this a lot in class and out of class through our blog posting, but like my group member above thinks, i find this a fascinating issue. Although it could be considered to be on the outskirts in both a moral and medical sense, i find that looking at the bizarre makes things a bit more conventional seem clearer.
In class i found it interesting when alcoholism was brought up when considering what can and can't be considered a disorder. I couldn't help but making connection between alcoholism and aptemnophilia. In man y of the readings it has been said that taking off the limb seems to "cure" the people of their worries, stresses, and apprehensions concerning their limb. I find that just simply cutting off the limb as a solution is preposterous. It may be that they are able to feel better about their lives once the limb is gone. However, coming back to alcoholism, an alcoholic is convinced that their life is in fact better when drinking. Just because they may in fact feel better quickly, it will not help them in the long run. A doctor would never help an alcoholic with more alcohol, much like a doctor should not treat an aptemnophilic by cutting off the limb. The problem is too complex for that kind of quick fix. I find that issues as in, what exactly is a disorder? can much better be explained through nonpolitical, scientific, and data based observations. I don't find social implications to lie int he same realm of medical issues. Tee further the two are form each other, the better off both will be.
