It has been proposed that all of these disorders be consolidated into one disorder, termed 'autistic spectrum disorder' in the DSM-V This has resulted from the broad spectrum of patients observed throughout the research history of autism. Also, it aims to remove the stigma of the "autism" term from the affect--an occurence that has become socially apparent over the last decade. Grinker states in his op ed that "Some autistic adults call themselves “Aspies” to celebrate their talents and differences."( Another example of people from a specific ['disordered'] community nicknaming themselves, much like the 'devotees' and 'wannabes' with amputees/apotemnophiliacs). Both articles are extremely interesting as well as important/relevant to our class discussions. so read up!!
