Arm or a Leg?

Apotemnophilia is one of the topics we covered greatly in class. Although i believe this condition is a disorder, i still believe that if the person can afford to pay for the surgery to remove a healthy limb, and the person can pass a mental examination, then the surgery should be done. Just because the majority of the population deems it not acceptable is no reason to stop someone else from removing a limb from THEIR body, as long as it does not cause harm to someone else. I mean in the end it really only hurts them. At the same time, if you willing remove a limb the person should forgo their right to any disabilty insurance that were obtained from the surgery. If this is not done what is to stop a person who struggles to pay his or her bills on time from removing a limb just to get money from the government. also if a surgeon removes the limb from the body instead of the patient taking medicine into his or her own hands, there is a less of a chance of something terribly wrong occurring. As was stated in Carol Elliot's mad article, apotemnophilia patients were said to cause physical harm to there body in order to have there limbs removed. Such examples included allowing a train to run over there limbs, or infecting there limbs with gang green to force a surgery. This shows that the people who truly want this done will find some way to make it happen, so i say let them do it, just dont let them get any benefits from going though with the act.

  1. I am confused by your last line? Don't let them get any benefit from going though with the act? what does that mean? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question.

  2. I think he means like medical benefits. He classifies it as a disorder but still believes that the people should be allowed to pay for it if they have money. I think he also means that they should not get insurance money or anything like that due to their new "disability" of missing a limb. Am I right Mason?
