Star Trek's take on Genetic Engineering

This is actually pretty interesting, outlining the reasoning for Star Trek's all out ban on Genetic Engineering (even in The Next Generation)...

Excerpt:
"

During Earth's 20th century, efforts to produce "superhumans" resulted in the Eugenics Wars. Genetically engineered individuals such as Khan Noonien Singh attempted to seize power. (TOS: "Space Seed")

This would lead to the banning of genetic engineering on Earth by the 22nd century, even research which could be used to cure critical illnesses. This ban was implemented because of the general fear of creating more tyrants such as Khan. It was also felt that parents would feel compelled to have their children genetically engineered, especially if "enhanced" individuals are allowed to compete in normal society."

...hmmmmmm. Relevant to us?

  1. Star Trek always does a great job portraying the possible pitfalls and triumphs of different emerging technologies in our times, and how they affected the future. Though I am disappointed that the wiki article didn't point out how in Voyager B'Elanna Torres also wanted to decrease the prominence of the forehead ridges associated with Klingons because she feared that her daughter would be teased like she was. I feel like that would lead us back to the days when people had to put down their race on applications, instead of it being optional.
