thanks for posting this. super fascinating. i love how it starts with people wanting to provide a lovely place for their children (to do yoga of all things, ha!) and brings it back around.
thoughts:
--children in india do not just *get* to go to school. i often wonder if people here realize what a privilege it is for us to all get to go to to school here (though our schools of course have their issues as well) the one place in india where all kids DO get to go to school (to my knowledge) is in in Kerala which is...COMMUNIST. fear the thought!
--i am often disturbed by the ways families end up justifying weird behaviors by people in this country, such as I HAVE to drive a giant suburban, it's for my children, so they can go to soccer and the cabin and be comfortable. I HAVE to have a house with six bathrooms, otherwise how would my kids manage? stuff like that. it gets wrapped up in the virtues of family values and totally creeps me out.
--i saw Vandana Shiva speak on Thursday and she is amazing, if you haven't heard of her. I will get around to posting my notes here, but also keep an eye out for her lecture to be posted at womenandwater.net (or you can see old video clips of her there as well). She is truly brilliant and does a great job of pointing out that when things are done locally you actually SEE what is happening, where things are coming from, what the effects are.....
