-Seriously.
The last few days, in respect to this assignment, seem like a long time to go eating food with little nutritional value. Yet while it started this way, the process of writing down my eating habits has by the end provoked me to curb my consumption, or at least eat a salad, as my usual week would consist of a much healthier variety of foods and tastes than just carrot cake.
I'm also in the middle of withdrawing from daily drinking coffee, and I'm not sure whether or not that affected my appetite. Enjoy.
Friday, March 5
“Breakfast:”
8:50 am – pieces of pancake (“Light’n’fluffy,” a sentimental box of food inherited from a theatrical production); Pieces of egg (from Cub) – in a hurry. Place/Reason: Home/ making eggs and pancakes for my roommate and his friend, who are at the time filming a movie in which they spend all day maintaining eye contact on the futon.
Snacks:
10:30 am – 3-berry muffin. Place: Hard Times Café / Reason: I can never resist their muffins.
1:45 pm – tangerine (from Cub Foods); De La Rosa (dulce de cacahuates de Cub tambien). Place: Regis hall room 275, in class / Reason: hungry hungy.
4 pm - ~6 crackers w/ aged cheddar, 2 small ginger cookies, a twizzler. Place/reason: tired, at lecture in ungodly-hot room in Lind Hall, trying to stay awake and cognizant of the discussion.
5:45 pm – 1 heated smoked turkey cheddarwurst on a fork (Johnsonville, and probably more dubious in its production than I’d ideally like). Place/reason: home, hungry, exhausted and don’t want to eat heavily before nap...
(6:30 - Messed up sleep schedule: nap til 10pm)
Dinner/dessert: 10:30 pm – Girlfriend’s mystery leftovers from Cheesecake Factory: 1 of some sort of grilled jumbo shrimp, a couple large mouthfuls of mashed potatoes, 8 mushroom slices, 1 droopy asparagus, a couple bites of Italian chicken (cheese and some sort of sauce), grilled onions. Place/reason: at the GF’s before a scene shoot for a film I volunteered myself for.
11:30 pm – red velvet cheesecake. Place: same / reason: delicious
Saturday, March 6
*Special circumstance snacks: after-hours film shoot, inside of a small and fully-stocked grocery store:
12:30 am – a roughly 3 x 3” carrot cake square. Place: House of Hansen/ reason: impulse buy, also delicious/sweet tooth.
1 am – 1/3 pint of “fat-free Raspberry Sorbet.” Place: same/ reason: I was bored and convinced myself I needed a ‘refreshing’ snack (see also: “Place”)
2 am – 4 M&M’s (melted chocolate inside) from the bottom of a pot of popcorn & M&M’s mix, so probably had some oil on them). Place/Reason: beyond all place or reason; “I eat because I’m sad and I’m sad because I eat?”
Not- breakfast: 10:30 am – Way too much Reese’s puffs cereal (out of the bag), 1 tangerine. Place/reason: met up at classmate’s house, woke up late and grabbed what I could from my cabinet.
Snack: 12:30 pm – Mint herbal tea (don’t know what kind, classmate’s mom brought it out), De La Rosa, otra vez. Place/Reason: architecture studio, working on a project.
Lunch: 1:30 pm – a variety of small pizza slices from Punch Pizza, (again, no menu or choosing of my own, all the ‘rents doing) with olives, spinach, rosemary, tomatoes, banana peppers, onions, and cheese of course; a Canada Dry ginger ale. Place/Reason: same/ classmate’s parent is wonderful.)
Scene shoot for a short film entitled “Carrot Cake Soup:”
5pm – handful of salted, roasted cashews; gin and grapefruit juice (small glass). Place/Reason: apartment building where scene is being shot/ I was offered the beverage and snuck the handful from a bowl on the counter.
6pm – carrot cake soup: pieces of carrot cake (walnuts, carrots, raisins, whatever else is in a carrot cake, cream cheese frosting) from Franklin St. Bakery, dropped in slow motion into a bowl of soy milk as part of a questionable movie plot; I heard it was a $25 – the cake was delicious but the soggy result of the milk-mixing was semi-reminiscent of bread mixed with lake water. Place/Reason: same/ it was part of the film.
Dinner: 9-or-so pm – “Weh-chuan” noodles (from United Noodles grocery) boiled then fried briefly with herbs & spices (from Seward Co-op) and smoked turkey cheddarwurst. Place/Reason: home/ wanting a meal with slightly more sustenance than much of the last few days’ junk.
!!! I have completely forgotten to include my intake of the most precious substance of all: no, it’s not absinthe – it’s water. I have indeed been drinking water, though evidently with less intention than with the rest of my food. This is existential red flag is actually prompting me to reconsider the consciousness involved in my everyday consumption.
Post-dinner:
10:30 pm – Two shots of vodka, “Stolichnaya,” which I neither particularly enjoyed nor disliked. Place/Reason: home/ celebration of a long week's end with roommate.
11:30 pm – half a piece of cheesecake (homemade by someone’s mom); bite of carrot cake (redeemed from film shoot); glass of water! Place/Reason: neighbor’s housewarming party/ sweet tooth.
Sunday, March 07
Snack:
11 am – another bite from the film prop carrot cake. Place/Reason: Home/ No time!
3:30 – Herb & green salad (out of a larger container from Cub Foods) with a small bite of the smoked turkey cheddarwurst in a Tupperware. Place/Reason: outside near the underpass of 35-W, sitting on a board amongst trees and dry grasses/ walked out on a frustrating situation where I would have eaten soup, and luckily happened to have packed the salad.
4pm – day-old vegan almond/blueberry muffin at Hard Times Café (only 1 dollar!); half of a huge vegetarian tostada that someone sitting next to me offered, with black beans, lettuce, onion, rice, tomato, sour cream, and red salsa. Reason: the muffin, because I was only interested in paying one dollar; the tostada, because it was a welcome gift of hearty nature.

First off, I feel you on the coffee withdrawl effecting my appetite. As I have recently made a major cutback in my liquid bean consumption. Kudos for trying!
ReplyDeleteAs for your nutritional value, I glad the assignment made you concious of your eating habits, even by day three. And though i initially deemed your weekend"snackalicious," your diet became much less terrible than your introduction gave you credit for (unless, of course you're diabetic). Though you snacked often, that sort of intake is really the best suited for your schedule. I mean, you're constantly doing things so you should constantly eat...right?...?
Don't forget that cereal, though high in carbohydrates, is ultra-fortified so you had plenty of nutrition for the whole day. Its kinda like eating a bunch of bread with table sugar and a multivitamin...yum!
My favorite: carrot cake soup.
What's the motive behind trying to curb the coffee habit? I've done it a couple times before too, but I'm just wondering if you guys have a specific reason for it.
ReplyDeleteI think that having "snackalicious" diets are actually better for you rather than eating big meals. I don't really know where I got this idea, but I'm sure someone somewhere told me that it's better for your metabolism to eat small amounts more frequently than large amounts of food (meals) a few times a day. I don't know if there's actually any truth to that, but for my schedule (and it seems perhaps yours too) this philosophy goes well with what happens to be convenient for me.
