Attempts at 5 servings of fruit and veggies a day...

Like most people have explained, these are not my normal eating habits. I spent the weekend in Iowa playing a 26-hour radio trivia game with my friends, and our team was kinda cooped up in a computer lab. 2.5 hours of sleep between Friday and Saturday, terrible eating habits, but there ya go.

March 4th
8:00 am - bowl of homemade macaroni and cheese, frozen (microwaved) strawberries, milk.
  • Recently I made a rather large batch of homemade macaroni and cheese, and it was clogging up the refrigerator at the apartment, so I ate some to get more fridge space.
12:30 pm - pita chips, hummus, grapes, water
  • Bought between classes at the convenience store in Blegen. Of the vegetarian options, this seemed the most substantial.
6:00 pm - vegetable lo mein, cream cheese wontons, milk
  • Ate with boyfriend's family, they were ordering Chinese takeout.
March 5th
8:30 am - bowl of frozen (microwaved) strawberries
  • Late to class, needed something quick
11:30 am - veggie burrito from Chipotle, milk
  • Ate something quick (I can down burritos like nobody's business) before road-tripping to Iowa
9:30 pm - medium thin-crust green pepper and mushroom pizza (4 slices), water
  • We were starving, wanted something fast yet substantial. Pizza joint with hardly anyone there? Sounds good.
Random snacks: piece of banana bread, square of coffee cake, a few animal crackers, a cookie

March 6th
10:00 am - pineapple, grapes, strawberries, cottage cheese
  • Quick run to the grocery store for breakfast, they had a fruit/salad bar. Not many other vegetarian breakfast options.
2:00 pm - finished green pepper and mushroom pizza (4 slices), water
  • Fruit breakfast wasn't as filling as I thought it would be. So I grazed on the rest of my pizza from about 11 am to 2 pm.
6:00 pm - mozzarella sticks, salad, veggie lasagna, bread
  • Out to dinner with friends. Celebrating completion of 26 hours of answering questions and coming in 9th out of 25-ish teams.
Random snacks: animal crackers

Foooooods

Okay, so here's everything I put in my mouth from Tuesday through Thursday:
Also, everything I ate was food that I had purchased from Rainbow Foods, and I prepared and ate everything at my own place.

Tuesday 3/2
Breakfast 8:00 AM:
-1 banana (organic) I try to have some sort of fruit every morning.
-1 bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal with 8th Continent vanilla fat free soymilk (less than 1/2 a cup) I eat it because it's healthy and filling.
-1 cup Folger's French Roast coffee with a bit of creamer. I NEED COFFEE.

Lunch 2:00 PM
-Oscar Meyer oven roasted turkey slices with regular mustard, tomato slices, and baby organic spinach on between two toasted pieces of whole grain bread. (I'm starving by this point because I had class all morning, and it's an easy, quick sandwich to make. Also healthy).
-1 organic apple (again, trying to incorporate fruit).
-1/2 cup fat free Kemp's cottage cheese (adds protein).
-Handful of wheat thins (wanted something more salty).

Dinner 5:00 PM
-Grilled chicken breast and steamed broccoli (can't remember the product name, but ate this because I was hungry).
-Handful of organic strawberries (wanted more fruit).
-Lots of water.

Wednesday 3/3
Breakfast 7:00 AM
-1 organic banana (again, I like to eat bananas/fruit in general in the morning!)
-1 bowl GoLean Crunch with 8th Continent soy milk (filling and delicious cereal. Plus, I love me some soy milk).
-Coffffeeeeee (1 cup) Need the caffeine boost!

Lunch 11:30 AM
-1 apple (getting my fruit-fix)
-1/2 cup of coffee (still Folger's with some French Vanilla creamer). (Needed an extra caffeine boost today)
-2 egg whites with 2 pieces of whole grain toast (wanted some more breakfast-y type foods for lunch, was hungry).
-crunchy Kashi TLC granola bar (wanted something sweet to munch with my coffee. Also has lots of fiber!)

Dinner 5:30 PM
-1 cup of Yoplait fat free strawberry yogurt (was hungry and wanted some sugary proteiny food)
-grilled chicken with sauteed spinach in a whole grain tortilla (needed some type of substantial dinner and protein).
-More water.

Thursday 3/4
Breakfast 8:00 AM
-1 cup Yoplait fat free vanilla yogurt (still craved me some yogurt in the morning).
-bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal with 8th Continent soy milk (sounds familiar? Love this cereal).
-Again, coffee with some creamer

Lunch 12:30 PM
-1 organic apple
-1 cup of purple grapes
-Oscar Meyer oven roasted turkey slices with tomato slices, mustard, organic baby spinach on two toasted slices of whole grain bread (I really like turkey sandwiches okay?! Plus, they're a good substantial meal).
-1/2 cup fat free Kemp's cottage cheese (Wanted a bit more protein).

Dinner 6:00 PM
-1 Veggie burger with baby lettuce, 1 slice of swiss cheese, mustard, on a plain hamburger bun (I actually really like veggie burgers, so I was hungry and this is what I was craving).
-1/2 banana (wanted fruit, but didn't feel like eating an entire banana).
-crunchy Kashi TLC granola bar (dessert kind of?)
-Lots of water. (need to hydrate).

I guess I eat healthier than I thought I did. At least this last week I was really good about eating well/portion control. I think I've just been in a pretty good mood for the past couple of weeks, so I like to eat healthier because it makes me feel better than if I ate unhealthier foods/spent money on food that I don't need.

Diary of a Hungry Fat Kid. Aren't You Lucky?

3-3-10
11AM – Pork Chops w/onions and red bell peppers, mashed potatoes, bottle of Dean’s Milk – Chocolate (Outside In Café in Moos Tower)
• $9
• Don’t usually eat this exact dish, but I eat at this place Mondays or Wednesdays before my class because it is literally across the hall from my classroom. The food is much better than what is offered at Coffman.
• Ate it at the dining area in Moos Tower
• The food is already made, and there was no waiting.

Noon – Bottle of Powerade = $1.25
• Bought this before class to drink. Need to stay hydrated, plus I didn’t want pop.

3PM – Grilled Pork Chops with rice, crab meat pie, cucumbers, lettuce, and carrots. Hazlenut Bubble Tea = $10
• I eat this from Quang Restaurant if I order to go. If I stayed, I would have eaten Pho (Vietnamese noodle soup). I usually go to Quang if I have a haircut or I am eating out with friends. I ate this at home.
• I got this to-go because my friend was unable to go.

10PM – 2 sandwiches (French bread, pork, Asian meatloaf, carrots, cucumber, paté), 2 bottles of water. 6 Girl Scouts’ Thin Mint cookies. Didn’t buy this, parents did.
• This sandwich is also from Quang. Pretty simple, I wasn’t in the mood to prepare anything, and I was playing Modern Warfare 2. I ate it at home. I usually eat late because of my work schedule after classes and then going straight to soccer for a few hours.

3-4-10
11AM – Famous Dave’s BBQ pork sandwich (Multi-grain bun, pork soaked in Famous Dave’s BBQ sauce), fries, and Vitamin Water Connect (Black Cherry and Lime). = $9
• I did not like what was offered at Coffman, so I decided to get something quick before my class in Moos Tower. I only had 30 minutes to eat, so I skipped out on the cole slaw and pickle spear. I ate this in the Outside In Café.

4PM – Can of A&W Cream Soda, One Fruit Roll-Up. Free
• Totally random. Ate this at my aunt’s house, watching my uncle play video games, and my 5 year old cousin asks me to eat with him. I wasn’t hungry, but I can’t say no to the little guy.
• Retrospectively, it was a good idea to eat it because I did not eat dinner until 11pm.

11PM – Mexican Pizza, Nacho Cheese Chalupa, 2 Hard Shell tacos, one XL Pepsi from Taco Bell. = $9.05
• After a soccer game, took it to-go. I usually go to this Taco Bell if it was late at night and I know my mom didn’t cook anything for dinner. I hate trying to cook something while I am half dead.
• The Mexican Pizza is actually something healthy to eat at Taco Bell, but I was massively hungry and I ordered the extra stuff. I got the X-Large Pepsi because the last thing I had to drink was the Cream Soda, and I did not have anything to drink while I was coaching in my soccer game.

Food Log Blog

Yeah, its not the most interesting food log, but i've resolved to lose weight so i've been cutting back (probably a bit too much). Also note, that I i drink between one and two liters of water throughout the day.

Friday:
12:00pm 16oz soy latte from Dunn Bros. I was hanging out and doing homework at the shop, it was the only way I was going to do homework on a Friday.

8:00pm Tuna Club from Jimmy Johns and a peach. Feeling a bit lazy and didnt want to cook, so I figured it was close and relatively cheap/healthy.

9:00pm-11:00pm Three 12oz Summit Horizon Red Ale's. Out with some friends and said if I'm gonna drink beer..I'm gonna drink good beer.

Saturday:
11:00am 16oz soy latte from Dunn Bros. I was out job searching and was a little hungry/thirsty.

6:00pm 80z alaskan king crab legs, one cup of mashed potatoes and a little salad. I went home for the day and my mother made a delicious meal. I'm so lucky, thanks Mom!!

Sunday:
5:00pm 2cups broccoli/carrot/pasta with cheese at home. It was a frozen meal I bought at the store, claimed to be healthy--definitely lacked on taste but hey 500 caolories.

Wow, I really never eat food before like 6pm. meh.

A Nutritional Tale of Epic Proportions

-Seriously.
The last few days, in respect to this assignment, seem like a long time to go eating food with little nutritional value. Yet while it started this way, the process of writing down my eating habits has by the end provoked me to curb my consumption, or at least eat a salad, as my usual week would consist of a much healthier variety of foods and tastes than just carrot cake.
I'm also in the middle of withdrawing from daily drinking coffee, and I'm not sure whether or not that affected my appetite. Enjoy.

Friday, March 5
“Breakfast:”
8:50 am – pieces of pancake (“Light’n’fluffy,” a sentimental box of food inherited from a theatrical production); Pieces of egg (from Cub) – in a hurry. Place/Reason: Home/ making eggs and pancakes for my roommate and his friend, who are at the time filming a movie in which they spend all day maintaining eye contact on the futon.

Snacks:
10:30 am – 3-berry muffin. Place: Hard Times Café / Reason: I can never resist their muffins.

1:45 pm – tangerine (from Cub Foods); De La Rosa (dulce de cacahuates de Cub tambien). Place: Regis hall room 275, in class / Reason: hungry hungy.

4 pm - ~6 crackers w/ aged cheddar, 2 small ginger cookies, a twizzler. Place/reason: tired, at lecture in ungodly-hot room in Lind Hall, trying to stay awake and cognizant of the discussion.

5:45 pm – 1 heated smoked turkey cheddarwurst on a fork (Johnsonville, and probably more dubious in its production than I’d ideally like). Place/reason: home, hungry, exhausted and don’t want to eat heavily before nap...

(6:30 - Messed up sleep schedule: nap til 10pm)

Dinner/dessert: 10:30 pm – Girlfriend’s mystery leftovers from Cheesecake Factory: 1 of some sort of grilled jumbo shrimp, a couple large mouthfuls of mashed potatoes, 8 mushroom slices, 1 droopy asparagus, a couple bites of Italian chicken (cheese and some sort of sauce), grilled onions. Place/reason: at the GF’s before a scene shoot for a film I volunteered myself for.
11:30 pm – red velvet cheesecake. Place: same / reason: delicious
Saturday, March 6
*Special circumstance snacks: after-hours film shoot, inside of a small and fully-stocked grocery store:

12:30 am – a roughly 3 x 3” carrot cake square. Place: House of Hansen/ reason: impulse buy, also delicious/sweet tooth.

1 am – 1/3 pint of “fat-free Raspberry Sorbet.” Place: same/ reason: I was bored and convinced myself I needed a ‘refreshing’ snack (see also: “Place”)

2 am – 4 M&M’s (melted chocolate inside) from the bottom of a pot of popcorn & M&M’s mix, so probably had some oil on them). Place/Reason: beyond all place or reason; “I eat because I’m sad and I’m sad because I eat?”

Not- breakfast: 10:30 am – Way too much Reese’s puffs cereal (out of the bag), 1 tangerine. Place/reason: met up at classmate’s house, woke up late and grabbed what I could from my cabinet.

Snack: 12:30 pm – Mint herbal tea (don’t know what kind, classmate’s mom brought it out), De La Rosa, otra vez. Place/Reason: architecture studio, working on a project.

Lunch: 1:30 pm – a variety of small pizza slices from Punch Pizza, (again, no menu or choosing of my own, all the ‘rents doing) with olives, spinach, rosemary, tomatoes, banana peppers, onions, and cheese of course; a Canada Dry ginger ale. Place/Reason: same/ classmate’s parent is wonderful.)

Scene shoot for a short film entitled “Carrot Cake Soup:”

5pm – handful of salted, roasted cashews; gin and grapefruit juice (small glass). Place/Reason: apartment building where scene is being shot/ I was offered the beverage and snuck the handful from a bowl on the counter.

6pm – carrot cake soup: pieces of carrot cake (walnuts, carrots, raisins, whatever else is in a carrot cake, cream cheese frosting) from Franklin St. Bakery, dropped in slow motion into a bowl of soy milk as part of a questionable movie plot; I heard it was a $25 – the cake was delicious but the soggy result of the milk-mixing was semi-reminiscent of bread mixed with lake water. Place/Reason: same/ it was part of the film.

Dinner: 9-or-so pm – “Weh-chuan” noodles (from United Noodles grocery) boiled then fried briefly with herbs & spices (from Seward Co-op) and smoked turkey cheddarwurst. Place/Reason: home/ wanting a meal with slightly more sustenance than much of the last few days’ junk.

!!! I have completely forgotten to include my intake of the most precious substance of all: no, it’s not absinthe – it’s water. I have indeed been drinking water, though evidently with less intention than with the rest of my food. This is existential red flag is actually prompting me to reconsider the consciousness involved in my everyday consumption.
Post-dinner:

10:30 pm – Two shots of vodka, “Stolichnaya,” which I neither particularly enjoyed nor disliked. Place/Reason: home/ celebration of a long week's end with roommate.

11:30 pm – half a piece of cheesecake (homemade by someone’s mom); bite of carrot cake (redeemed from film shoot); glass of water! Place/Reason: neighbor’s housewarming party/ sweet tooth.

Sunday, March 07

Snack:
11 am – another bite from the film prop carrot cake. Place/Reason: Home/ No time!

3:30 – Herb & green salad (out of a larger container from Cub Foods) with a small bite of the smoked turkey cheddarwurst in a Tupperware. Place/Reason: outside near the underpass of 35-W, sitting on a board amongst trees and dry grasses/ walked out on a frustrating situation where I would have eaten soup, and luckily happened to have packed the salad.

4pm – day-old vegan almond/blueberry muffin at Hard Times Café (only 1 dollar!); half of a huge vegetarian tostada that someone sitting next to me offered, with black beans, lettuce, onion, rice, tomato, sour cream, and red salsa. Reason: the muffin, because I was only interested in paying one dollar; the tostada, because it was a welcome gift of hearty nature.

What I ate

ny times cesarean article

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/07/health/07birth.html?pagewanted=1&th&emc=th

"As a result, many young women have already seen children born by the time they become pregnant, and birth seems natural to them, not frightening. "

please dont judge

My diet over the past few days was not what it usually is because i spent time with one of my friends who i have not seen in a long time, so i ate what he ate and food that was cheap, fast, and close by.
day 1:
9:10 am: I had to run to make it to my lecture in time so i got a bowl of cereal for the middlebrook dining hall, and a muffin.
4:10 pm: I was on break from my job though UDS in coffman, so i grabbed a hat trick sandwhich from the MDeli, some waffle fries from chic Fila, and a pint of 2%milk. because it was fast and free.

Day 2:
9:40 am: Before my class i went to the middlebrook dining hall and got 2 pancakes, 2 pieces of bacon, and a scoop of eggs. it was fast, and since i already purchased my meal plan i figured i should use it.

10:30pm: since i missed lunch and dinner spending time with my friends, we both decided we were hungry so went to Qdoba in dinkytown and bought a chicken burrito. We had a discussion over which place had the better burritos between Qdoba and chipotle, and since chipotle was closed we decided to go to Qdoba first.

Day 3
10:10am: I had to go into work on saturday at 10:30am so i wouldnt be able to use a meal plan to get breakfast, so i got a blueberry bagel from Einstien's in coffman.

1:10pm: since the coference lunch rush was over, my manager let the employees get sherbert from jamba, so i had 2 scoops of rasberry sherbert.

1:45pm: after work we can get a free sandwhich from Einstiens, so i got a turkey club.

6:00pm. TO settle to debate over which place had the better burrito we went to chipotle, so we could compare the two burritos, so i got a chicken burrito.

Food log

This was super fascinating. To watch myself go through this exercise, to see how lifestyle choice (or sometimes just demands, location) affect the time we make for food, etc. I know I’m going to get into Michael Pollan and regret so many choices. ;) But I'm trying, Michael Pollan, really I am.

Day one

8am Breakfast at home

Toast (sourdough bread from New French Bakery)
Hope Butter (Hope, MN)
Rose Petal Jam made by husband Sean with roses from backyard
Coffee (from S. America?)
Why? Because toast and coffee are delicious.
Hope butter started as a joke long ago, but it really is delicious, local, and “affordable” as far as fancy butter goes.

Water

12:30 Lunch at home

2 organic free range eggs from Larry Schultz’ farm, Owatonna (purchased at co-op)
Scrambled with organic valley milk--Lafarge, WI
With micro greens--from co-op. Not sure where grown.
With Valley View smoked cheddar-WI
Lemon-lime sparkling water, in a can (possibly lined with bad plastic), bottled in TX
Orange--I think from FL or CA, I can’t remember. Shared with my dog, Skye, because he loves oranges and comes running from a mile away with a desperate look in his eyes when you peel an orange.
Why? Because I had time to cook this quickly before work and also saved me $$ since I already had these ingredients.

2:30 p.m. at work
Dark chocolate mocha
Why? Celebrating my boss’ return from a month in Uganda & hearing some adventure stories

Water

7:45 p.m. at home
Apple “lady alice” from Washington--purchased at Trader Joe’s (where I don’t typically buy produce. 49 cents. Tasty)
Why? Because I’m hungry and our oven takes a long time to heat up.

8:30 p.m. at home
Chicken enchiladas that were frozen from Trader Joe’s--cheap, hopefully delicious, I don’t know if I want to know where they came from, or how the chickens lived or the tomatoes were grown. They are in the oven now.
Red Wine from central CA. (also from T-joes, where I obviously stopped between 2:30 and 7:45)

Why? The why for both of these: because it’s getting late and because my husband is in his second year of law school and I am sooo tired of cooking and doing dishes. (partially kidding) (partially) I realize now that my mom was some sort of cooking and cleaning genius. Also, you have no idea how much more wine you start drinking once you work at a Prenatal Yoga studio. The Prenatal Yoga Paradox, perhaps.

Day Two

~8am Breakfast, at home:
Pretty much the same.
Toast: 1 piece of Sourdough (New French), 1 Sprouted Grain bread (Alvarado St. Bakery, CA)
Coffee, organic valley milk (WI)
Water
Why? This is what I do these days. Usually I only eat sprouted grain bread because it has more protein, but mainly because it agrees with me better.
Shared an orange with Skye again because we still have oranges in the house and it is like eating sunshine

More coffee, because I’m rebellious like that.

12:45 Lunch
Roasted some diced blue potatoes and yellow potatoes from my friend mike’s farm, with garlic from his farm and sunflower oil that his friend grew and pressed

Served under organic pinto beans (canned in NY grown who knows where.), salsa by salsa lisa (Mpls), and the same greens from yesterday

Also some of this tasty Greek Gods honey yogurt from the co-op. Made from cow milk. “manufactured in WA”

Why? I am home reading Fausto-Sterling before work and this I could do at the same time, pretty much. Also, this writing-down thing is totally encouraging me to cook here and not just grab something on the way to work. On a related note, usually I avoid canned foods (mostly) but I realized then I just end up buying out instead and that gets old real fast.

7pm? Dinner
Mediterranean tuna on baguette from France 44 deli and this amazing melty round brownie thing
Why? I didn’t bring dinner with me, it’s a block from work, they give us a discount and...yum. I hope no dolphins were harmed….

DAY 3:

8am Breakfast: a little bit of coffee, half a piece of toast maybe?
Why? I think I was nervous so not very hungry.

11:30 coffee & blueberry muffin purchased at Walter Library….meeting with friend.

3pm: Apple (same details as last apple)
Why? Running way late to next appt. So ate the apple while I stopped home to let the dog out.

4:15: tiny bit of dark chocolate between meeting and client because I was headed to a lecture and then a performance and knew I wouldn’t eat ‘til late. Water.

10:00pm
Lemongrass Noodles w/ vegetables and mock duck at Jasmine 26. Pinot Grigio.
Why? Late dinner after show at the Walker and Lucy Lippard talk at the U. Went to Jasmine because it was near my friend’s house...wine--why not?! Mock Duck--because who knows were there chicken comes from, but actually, who knows where their mock duck comes from for that matter……….

Done writing down what I eat. Hooray!

P.S. At the Lucy Lippard talk she pointed out a piece at the Nash right now about how many women don’t have access to water, or haul it miles and miles, while we have water at the ready and complain about having to clean. So now I feel lame for complaining about doing dishes. Sorry women water haulers of the world! I will enjoy doing dishes now. I promise.

Not Ordinary Eating Habits

My food intake for the past three days is not really a good representation of my normal eating habits. I think just the timing of this assignment makes me look like I have terrible eating habits but I wrote down everything I ate. My eating was off due to errands I had to run that weren't normal and my volunteering. But I guess here it goes:

March 4th, 2010
8:20 am: Special K cereal-1 cup; skim milk-1/2 cup; apple juice-1/2 cup; I ate in Sanford dinning hall; breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I needed to eat before my organic chemistry test
11:45 am: I had Leeann Chins for the first time! I had bourbon chicken and asian noodles; I was in uptown after making a short trip to the running room
2:00 pm: a granola bar-just for a little snack because I knew I was going to be eating later than usual!
8:30 pm: I ate some ice cream with a cookie and some other random toppings including chocolate chips and oreo bits; at AEPi- one of my sister's happened to be running for their sweetheart and it was house participation and philanthropy night; who doesn't love ice cream?
9:30 pm: dinner finally happened at half price apps at Applebee's; I hate potato twisters with queso-one of the new appetizers, I was pretty hungry!

March 5th, 2010
10:00 am: Bagel-double chocolate chip with plain lite cream cheese. yum yum. I had been wanting to try that for a long time and finally did!
12:30 pm: turkey and cheese sandwich and lots of fruit-grapes, melon and pineapple; I ate at my sorority house and was really hungry even after that bagel!
1:30 pm: 100 calorie pack of Oreo cookies; in my room; I just really wanted a little bit of chocolate...
5:00 pm: pizza rolls; with my friend Melisa in my room; I needed to eat dinner and Judy (the house cook) does not cook on Friday nights so we usually order food anyways. I did not want dominos....soo...I guess pizza rolls were a little bit better

March 6th, 2010
8:30 am: Special K cereal-1 cup, no skim milk-and a cup of apple juice; Special K granola bar; I ate at my sorority house because the dining hall doesn't open until 11 and I needed to eat before I volunteered at Dance Your Heart Heart Out. The milk ran out and I didn't know how to change it...
10:00 am: Fruit strip and water; This was my first snack and the start of my 6 hour volunteering, which really was 6 hours straight of dancing.
10:00 am-4:00 pm: I had a steady intake of water and 1 diet dr. pepper with cherry. I needed to keep hydrated and I just needed caffeine.
12:30 pm: two slices of (NASTY) dominos pizza. Again, at MOA, and it was free food, why not?
2:00 pm: a toll house cookie; again at MOA and again...it was free. Dancing after 4 hours gets tiring!
6:45 pm: angel hair pomodoro with bread and oil. AMAZING. I was tired after all the dancing I did and my boyfriend and I went out to dinner

Kojiro humanoid goes musculoskeletal in a big way

via Engadget by Paul Miller on 3/6/10

We just found a new friend. Kojiro, a humanoid being built by the University of Tokyo's JSK Robotics Laboratory, has a detailed musculoskeletal system built to mimic the human body. It works on a system of artificial bones, muscles and tendons to create a robot that is theoretically more light and agile than your regular bot, and which moves in a more organic fashion to our untrained eyes. The bot has motors which pull cables that simulate the method which muscles and tendons interact, and has about 100 tendon-muscle structures, giving it 60 degrees of freedom -- more than an average rotary joint bot like Asimo (34 degrees, last time we checked). The robot shaves weight with its lighter, plastic materials and small brushless motors. The idea is to make a robot that's more people friendly by not being substantially heavier or more rigid than a human it might come into contact with. Of course, that's not the only perk of a bot built like this: the human-style flexible and twistable spine gives Kojiro all sorts of abilities that your regular bot is just too straight-spined for. Like the limbo, for instance. The big difficulty here is that all the motion and flexibility means Kojiro is a big chore to program, and there's an army of gyros, accelerometers and force sensors embedded throughout the bot to help it learn its balance. Currently they're working with an iterative learning process to get small motions down until Kojiro can eventually manage more complex motions like sitting motionless at a desk for nine hours on a Saturday, tending to FarmVille. Check out a video of Kojiro in limited action after the break.

WWAID? (What would an artificial intelligence do?)

This is fascinating - a bit of a divergence from food blogging, although when you ask an artificial intelligence why it ingested what it did, you're sure to get slightly different responses...

It is all about stepping outside of the human mind and thinking about decision making processes from the perspective of an intelligent brain that "evolves" based on programmable algorithms and logics, fast logics - not the way we evolved, a billion interacting parts with a billion outdated contingencies.

Reading this relaxes me - soothes my aching fear of all human psycho conundrums. Maybe it will soothe you too.

And hey, the human brain evolved in the face of a million different logical conundrums, if the young human mind was at all analogous to a young AI. First we evolved towards sources of food, a body of capacities to obtain it, to process energy... a couple billion years later we were evolving complexities - emotions - and our eating preferences... I wish I could read my own mind like a map of nodes and metanodes, a process of reinforced and associative learning with clear connective paths, I wish I could know things like how many times a particular concept has to be reinforced before I will believe it, or how many times an assumption has to be negated before I will recognise my fallacious thinking - and futhermore, the complexity of knowing that as one individual brain, my experience, even if I were to operate entirely within logic, might entirely fail to converge to the greater body of logical conclusions - while another person's experience might fall more within the mean...

I am using this as a tonic to cure a bout of senseless human depression. I can't trace the rhyme or reason so I am searching the internet for a cyborgic transcendence from this nonsense.

Nutrition of Britney or well Im trying

Thursday March 4th
8:30am- Honey Nut cheerios and skim milk
• 1 bowl
• I ate it in the dining hall at centennial
• I choose this particular cereal because it is less calories than the others in the dining hall
8:55am- Plain yogurt with granola
• 1 small bowl
• Also eaten in the dining hall
• I usually eat some yogurt because of the nutrition aspects and the granola just makes it easier to eat because yogurt doesn’t appeal for me alone
12:00pm- salad with ranch dressing, cheese, and cucumbers
• A small plate
• Dining hall
• I choose the salad for the nutrition that vegetables give. I was light on the dressing and on the cheese because that has more calories and fat.
12:15pm- Trixs with skim milk
• 1 bowl
• I also ate it in the dining hall
• I choose this because it took my attention with the bright colors and it is what I really wanted to eat and calorie consistence went out the window
12:30pm- two sugar cookies
• In the dining hall
• This I choose because every time I passed them I just wanted one so finally my will power caved and there I went
2:00pm- Starbucks dark cherry mocha
• Grande
• In starbucks
• Met up with a friend for some coffee and the guy at starbucks put up a very persuading argument about trying something new

7:00pm- Chicken wrap
• 1 of the halves and half of the other halves
• Chilis
• I choose this because if I took the avocado out and some of the cheese it would be under 750 calories so it would be a better choice
Lots of water all day. I drink at least 6-8 water bottles full throughout any given day
Friday March 5
10:00am- Raisin bran cereal with fat free milk
• 1 small bowl
• At the mayo clinic
• It was what appealed to me after over 9 hours of not eating because of blood tests in the morning so I gave in.
11:45am- Carmel popcorn
• About half the bag
• Still at mayo
• It was a snack before my appointment because eating lunch was too early
8:00pm- Veggie Pizza
• 5 small slices
• Campus Pizza
• Out to dinner with my mom and boyfriends family at a pizza place so It seems like an oblivious idea

10pm-1:00am- Candy of all sorts- rips, hot tomalies, juji bees, and hard candy

• At the drumline competiton
• Was getting hungry and needed something to keep me going and that’s what was in my purse
1:40pm- Walking taco
• Doritos bag
• At a drum line competition that I was volunteering at
• I didn’t have much time to eat and was really hungry so I got something I could eat fast and get back to doing what I was doing
5:00pm- potatoes and sausage
• About a plate full
• At my hotel
• My mom and I had a stove and thought we would make something to eat for fun and its one of my favorites and fairly healthy
7:00pm- popcorn
• 2 small bags
• In my hotel
• Is a smart pop popcorn that has some health in it and less calories but it is sweet and fills the stomach
7:30pm- candy of various types
• 1 cup
• In the hotel
• It was here from last night and very addictive so it’s extremely hard to pass up
8:00pm- fiber one bar
• 1 bar
• In the hotel
• Needed something sweet that wasn’t going to keep eating empty calories
9:30pm- vitamin water
• 1 bottle
• In the hotel
• Needed a new taste got sick of water and it only had 10 calories.

Embarassing truth about my intake

So initially, I was going to document both food that I ate and the amount of exercise I got. Unfortunately, I didn't go to the gym once this week - so my "exercise" just involved walking around campus, the occasional trot to the bus, and some half-assed push ups. Oh well. More on this in the "why did I eat that crap" break down...

I should mention: I am blogging this at 3:40 am, waiting for a program that I've been writing all week to FINALLY. F*CKIN'.WORK. And I have an organic chemistry exam on Monday that I have done zero studying for because, of course, I've been writing this program every waking hour that I haven't been watching 30 rock or ... well, you'll see, in the "why I drank this booze" break down. Oh, and most of my hours have been waking - because sleep is the first thing I sacrifice when I have a lot of work to do - long before my precious 30 rock.

March 2nd, 2010
8:30 am, at home - a few bites of yogurt, because I thought I might go to the gym today and eating something is better than nothing, especially a few hours before a run. I didn't actually go.
9:00 am, meeting before our class! - 1 cup of coffee. Because this is way way earlier than I would normally wake up.
12:00 pm - Tomato bisque soup w/ a pop over @ purple onion - because instead of going to class, I rewrote my program from hell for the first time.
3:30 pm in transit to the computer science building - small mocha. Was running out of steam.
9:30 pm at a mexican restaraunt in st paul- chorizo enchiladas with my dad. I had class straight until 8:30 and was starving at this point.
11:00 pm at home- 1 cup of coffee. Because I am obsessive and I needed to get my program working.
11:10 pm at home- 1/2 a cup of chocolate chips... oral fixation? I don't know.
12:00 pm at home- another cup of coffee. Perhaps because I am insane. Still working on that program.
total calories: 1720

March 3rd, 2010
11:30 am at home (yes, when I woke up) - 1 cup of yogurt. Breakfast. Back to work on my program.
11:30 am at home- 1 cup of coffee. Something to do with being an addict.
3:00 pm at home- worst peanut butter and jelly sandwich ever. Still programming
5:30 pm in global studies class - yogurt.
9:30 pm - Tracy's Saloon - cheeseburger and fries... because to get out of the house, I met my dad at the bar.
9:30 pm - 1/4 of a beer, 1/3rd of a mixed drink. Because I was sipping off of my dad's drinks.
10:20 pm -at home, coffee again. Still programming. Was working until 4 am, had a breakthrough at around 3:45 and was finally satisfied enough to sleep.
total calories: 1700

March 4th, 2010
8:30 am at home - measly amount of yogurt.
9:30 am in our class- coffee, and a cherry coke. Because I had to give a presentation on Cyborg Feminism and I was so tired I doubted my ability to spell my own name.
11:30 am at purple onion- pop over and chicken wild rice soup. Back at purple onion working on my program, which was supposed to be done by midnight of this night and I still wasn't near finished.
6:30 pm - after going home and crashing for 5 hours, and missing a class - yogurt.
9:00 pm - 1 beef taco, at the bar with my dad again.
9:00 pm - 1 summit maibach, because I got an email that said the deadline for my program was extended till saturday night.
10:00 pm - at home - more coffee. Still wanted to finish my program.
10:50 pm - at home, 1 cup of white rice with soy sauce. Wasn't so much hungry as bored.
12:00 am - 2 whiskey sours. Because my ex boyfriend called and wanted to play catch up at Psycho Suzies.
1:00 am. Psycho Suzies still, Sausage wrapped in bacon - because I am a terrible, terrible jew.
1:00 am. "Free Tilly" - because it had a hilarious name. But boy was it ever a terrible idea to drink this! I fell on my way into my apartment for the first time all winter.
total calories: 2300

March 5th, 2010
12:40 pm (this is when I woke up. Cripes.) a banana for breakfast at home
1:30 pm - some weird coffee with vanilla in it so I would be lucid in ochem lecture
3:30 pm - cereal w/ milk at home
5:30 pm - more coffee. ... wow. at home
7:10 pm - an apple, snacking before dinner
8:00 pm - Tracy's Saloon, a pork sandwich w/ fries and a beer, at the bar again. With my dad.
10:00 pm - cake for my friend of the family's birthday, at my cousins house.
11:00 pm - a margarita. Because my cousin made a pitcher of margaritas for the family so that we could tolerate each other.
1:00 am - more coffee. Because I decided to whip out my programming assignment again at the tail end of a drunken family card game. And in fact, that is what I am still working on, right now.
total calories: 1855

I counted my calories because I thought I'd hit two birds with one stone - I wanted to see how much booze and junk I am ingesting, and I wanted to see how much of my daily intake that ends up comprising. I really could do better. Also, most weeks I would go to the gym and run off 300 - 600 calories, 1- 3 times in the week. And when I wasn't counting my calories, I was eating a lot more junk! The fact that I had to write it down caused a lot of stuff to lose its appeal (dessert after every meal, finishing all of my french fries, drinking beer every night..)

yee gads! I don't think I'm very healthy.

the truth, the whole truth, and everything I put in my mouth for 72-hours

Eating Diary - CSCL 3331

March 3, 2010

8:30am Breakfast:
1/2c. 1% Old Home Cottage Cheese
1/2c. Gaymont strawberry yogurt
1 organic banana (sliced into the yogurt and cottage cheese)
1 slice of toasted, homemade (from scratch, NOT by me)
cornbread with (a bunch of) peanut butter and honey
2/3 of a pot of Dunn Bros. roasted, Guatemala free trade,
light roasted - coffee brewed  at home

This meal is relatively stable - I feed the dog, make the coffee,
take the dog for a run and get back to sit down and eat as soon
as I can.  The timing varies only slightly; on school days by 0730
and on non-school days by 0830.  I eat in the kitchen, which is
arguably the best room in the house (lots of morning sun, big
island at which to eat, plenty of room to spread out my books
and read while I eat).

Breakfast has become my anchor for the day.  There was a time
when my "breakfast" was a cigarette and some coffee, at 2pm.
My new life looks a lot more like the one my parents used to have
and which I always thought was lame.  Who knew?

Lunch - 1:30 PM:

1 Sliced, organic, peppered and smoked turkey sandwich on freshly
baked ciabatta bread with havarti cheese, tomato, lettuce (no
mayo or other crap) - this is a big sandwich
8oz. of freshly baked, organic corn chips (unsalted)
1c. curry lentil soup (freshly made, frigging' amazing)
16oz. bottle of Perrier

Today I picked up lunch for two at the Mayday Cafe, my new
favorite coffee shop/deli/bakery.  I took the lunches to go so
I could spend some time with a friend who is terminally ill and
doesn't get much company.  Mayday Cafe, as the name might
indicate to some, is left, left, left.  Organic this, free range
that, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies (the size of Rhode
Island) that put my dead Grammy to shame (may she rest in
peace) - all are on the menu.  Mayday, at 35th Street and
Bloomington Ave S., near Powderhorn Park is directly across
the street from one of my very good friend's house - I'm there
frequently, and I sometimes house-sit and dog-sit for her.  I
would like to say that the left-ness is what draws me, but it's
much more about convenience and awesome food and body-
modified and identity-diverse staff.  I really try to keep my
dollars local and put them to use in support of things that are
not rapacious, greedy, ugly, destructive or grossly conspicuous;
however, I am not above stopping in to a Starbux if there is
nothing else within a reasonable distance.  A few years ago,
rapacious, greedy, ugly, and destructive described me just as
well as it described my spending choices - all progress toward
more responsible choices are exponential improvements over
all of my previous history.

I choose this food because I am trying to run off my inevitable
winter fat and because I quit smoking (after 25 years), so I have
a lot of body repair to do before summer is here.

5PM - After class coffee meeting - back to the Mayday Cafe
2 small mugs of strong coffee with a bit of half and half in each
1 chocolate chip cookie the size of Rhode Island (seriously,
3/4" thick, 6" around, made within the last two hours)

My friend (who lives across from Mayday Cafe)  took my dog to
the dog park for me and we met at the Mayday to exchange a
cup of coffee for my dog and to linger and whine about the
University (she's a professor).

7:30PM - Not really dinner, just to tide me over until my big
breakfast
1 apple (probably genetically altered - I have no idea, but the bag
came from Target)
1 Oats & Honey granola bar (chewy and not at all good for me)
from "Sunbelt", again, from Target - on super clearance - three
boxes for three bucks.
1/2c. of raw, unsalted almonds (again from Target, again cheap)
1 liter of tap water

10:00pm - walk the dog and eat something foreign
Zwei Stucken Haribo Lakritz gegessen.  Direkt von Deutschland
- ausgezeichnet!

March 4, 2010

7:30am Breakfast:
1/2c. 1% Old Home Cottage Cheese
1/2c. Gaymont strawberry yogurt
1 organic banana (sliced into the yogurt and cottage cheese)
8-10 Triscuits with peanut butter on each (I was out of all bread
-like substances)
2/3 of a pot of Dunn Bros. roasted, Guatemala free trade, light
roasted - coffee brewed  at home

Why and where are just about the same
as yesterday's breakfast, but the dog
refused to run this morning (he was
dead tired from yesterday's dog park -
probably sore too).  I had a test in one
of my classes anyway, so not running
turned out to be ok.

3:30pm "Lunch"
1 1/2 Old fashioned doughnuts from Starbucks(ganz toll)
1 Very large coffee with half and half

What can I say?  Classes until 2pm, then meeting a friend at the
dog park for an hour's worth of a walk (for me and the dog).
Who has time for lunch every day?  Not me.  (But I probably could
have done better than doughnuts - they just looked so damned good.)

5:30 "Dinner"
1 Braeburn apple
1/2c. of raw, unsalted almonds (again from Target, again cheap)
Some water from the tap.

11:30pm Schnack
Drei Stucken Haribo Lakritz gegessen.  Direkt von Deutschland - aus-
gezeichnet!

March 5, 2010

8:30am Breakfast
1c of Smart Start Cereal with some milk
1 slice whole wheat toast with Skippy (extra-chunky - gobs of it)
8oz. Tropicana orange juice
2/3 of a pot of Dunn Bros. roasted, Guatemala free trade, light
roasted beans (ground to #8) - coffee brewed  at home

Lunch 11:45am
31. 水煮鱼 Fish Fillet in Spicy Tofu Broth

1 glass of coke

(a lot of napkins for my sweaty brow, and some friendly directions
on how to eat this entree ... they gave me a spoon the size of a
child's sandbox shovel; it turns out that this is used to move the
soup into the smaller bowl - I am glad I asked, and they were totally
cool about it).

Okay colleagues, I am NOT a foody; all of my friends are foodies.
This means I get to know all of their secret restaurants and other
foody stuff - I guess this makes me a foody groupie, a hanger-on
of persons who take food very seriously.  I live with a foody, and
the foodies all seem to lurk about together like some clique, trading
secret foody information - to them, Lynn Rosetto Casper is a hack.
They will probably not speak to me after I have so brazenly broken
the Code of Foodyism (never tell anybody where you eat, ever),
whatever, I will find new friends who can feed me.  Check this
place out if you have a desire for authentic Szechuanese food.
Two of my friends lived in China for years and will testify that
this is as close as one can get to the real deal in the Twin Cities:
(and, the place is full of Chinese diners, which is always a good
sign).

Little Szechuan  (they don't need your business, but you should go!)
422 University Ave W, St. Paul, MN 55103 (651) 222-1333
http://www.littleszechuan.com

I had to meet my insurance agent to sign some papers, and I made
her take me to lunch (okay, she's known me since I was four years
old, so I kinda do whatever she tells me to do, I'm always signing
papers and giving her more money, but I think I am nearly risk-free;
I would get paid if I received an 'F' in this class - it's weird).  The food
was HOT, and the fish was flounder - a LOT of flounder in a huge bowl
with a number of things that were difficult to identify (animal?
vegetable?).

3:30pm - On the way to the dog park - I'm starving!!
Sechs Stucken Haribo Lakritz gegessen.  Direkt von Deutschland
- ausgezeichnet!

Dinner 5:30pm
Sweet Green Curry with Beef (split the entree 50/50)
(Historically known as the Queen of all Curries. You don’t have to
visit the Palace to eat this entrée traditionally reserved for royal
guests.) excerpted from the menu - if you couldn't tell

The Ultimate Chicken Pad Thai (split entree 50/50)
Try this legendary and gloriously addictive noodle dish, and learn
why it is Thailand’s gift to the world.  again, excerpted from the menu

1 glass of coke (my own description)

TRUE THAI - Authentic Cuisine from the Golden Kingdom
2627 East Franklin Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55406

Okay, two Asian restaurants in one day is a rarity for me, but
sometimes shit happens.  This time it was a matter of convenience
and a bit of curiosity - I was having dinner with a dog park friend
(a special breed of friend), and it was very proximal; furthermore,
I've never been to this oh-so-hyped joint.  So, like, most people are
all, like "OMG, True Thai, True Thai!!", but I'm all like, "Mehhh".
Whatever.  It was decent food, but I was not all OMG or anything.
I spent about $35 on dinner for two, but lunch was paid for by my
insurance goddess (who subsequently writes it off her taxes, what
a world) - I call it a wash.

After 8pm

I drank two more home-brewed cups of mega-double-ultra-rock'em-
sock'em-Guatemalan coffee (I make killer coffee).  I will be up reading
Nietzsche until 2am.

End of intrusion into my life.  Now I'm gonna read up on all you other
people.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I have to say that the mostly healthy food you see
in my diary is a bit of an exception to my typical 72-hour period.
Honestly, it wasn't about the diary thing - it was 99% coincidence and
lack of time.  I have been known to plow through 2/3 of a package of
Oreos when I'm pissed or sad - it was just a good week.  I don't want
to be one of those people who adds 30 pounds after they quit smoking
(January 1, 2010), so I have been pretty conscious (NOT conscientious)
about what I eat.

If I put anything else in my mouth during the previous 72-hours, I didn't
know about it, or it's none of your damned business - but I think we covered
just about all of it.

This was fun.  Let's do it again some time.

p.s. I quit smoking because Robin told me some CRAZY shit about nicotine -
if you're trying to quit, you should ask him.

just a little more about women and pregnancy and ethics

from the Hastings Center Report bioethics forum (http://www.thehastingscenter.org/Bioethicsforum/Post.aspx?id=4492&blogid=140)

:.....Another troubling aspect of the treatment is that it exemplifies the extent to which pregnant women in our society are expected to sacrifice their own needs and wants to produce a perfect baby. Legitimate research on the long-term effects of prenatal dexamethasone exposure in children is still in early stages (with some indication that it may be linked to problems with cognitive development), but it has been established that many women taking dexamethasone suffer considerably, spending much of their pregnancy feeling sick. Still, our society expects pregnant women to do what medical experts say it takes to give birth to a perfect baby, and they are often blamed when something goes "wrong."

The scholars’ letter does argue that women should be fully informed of "risks they assume for themselves and on behalf of their future children," but the emphasis is clearly on the fetuses. Thus it does not question the unreasonable expectation that society places on pregnant women to be selfless incubator for their fetuses.

I oppose the dexamethasone treatment primarily because its goal – suppressing natural human variations that do not cause illness or pain – is suspect, and because it preserves a social and cultural environment that is inhospitable for people with intersex conditions. In particular, because women are typically advised to take dexamethasone when they have already given birth to an older child with CAH, I worry what the treatment would mean for the older child, especially if the child is an older sister. I am further concerned about the enormous pressure pregnant women are under to produce perfect babies, and the moral judgment that follows the birth of a child with disabilities or atypical physique....."

sharing lucy lippard

I heard and saw Lucy Lippard speak at Cowles last night and was typing my notes for myself and thought I’d share it with you all. Check out the link if you don’t know who she is, but basically she’s a well-known art writer/feminist/etc. who’s been publishing for years and years.

The talk was on Women and Water Rights--a symposium and exhibition going on at the Nash Gallery right now. You should check it out and also consider Vandana Shiva’s talk later this month (womenandwater.net)

(FYI I was taking notes in the dark and she spoke quickly.)
