roids vs. cosmetic

when it comes to the sports worlds its all about competition, and trying to one up your opponent. so some athletes decide to take steroids to become stronger and to extent the longevity of their careers. players who can play longer and stronger usually get paid more money so in the end its mainly about getting paid as much as you can and just take the effects the steroids will have on your body.

for the cosmetics, the group mentioned how each year over 12 billion dollars are spent on cosmetic procedures a year. in our fashion driven society the person who gets the job is not always the person is the most qualified, but sometimes who dresses the part. so again the issue of price is shown as a means to drive the demand.

  1. In the NY Times Mag. this week there was an article on Obama's junior staffers. Apparently within Obama's circle there is a strong emphasis on working out and being fit--one of the young men said he joined a gym because everyone else did, and that his co-worker let him know that "people were noticing" when his physique improved, and there seemed to be a pressure to keep up....this seems a similar (though maybe less drastic) way in which workers modify their bodies to stay in the job...

  2. Ha, that reminds me of the film "American Psycho," with Patrick Bateman basically living his entire life as one constantly perfecting himself, and trying to fit in with the 'cool, high-rollers crowd.' I know the whole serial killing part doesn't really come into play here (at least I hope not), but it is definitely worth noting how physique-centric our society really is. Guys have the pressure to be buff and have the perfect jaw-line or whatever, and girls are pressured to be size 2's and have boobs as big as watermelons. It's kind of discouraging to see so little emphasis on actual intelligence of individuals in many different forms of media nowadays, and instead have that attention be focused on what latest liposuction so-and-so had and how he/she looks great, or who's recently dyed their hair and it looks like absolute shit! All it takes is for my roommate to even say the words "The Hills" before I want to kind of throw up in my mouth a little bit.
